Vít Soukup

A distinctive personality of the cultural scene of the 1990s and 2000s, Vít Soukup was not only a painter and sculptor but also a film-maker, man of the theatre and theoretician who, at the same time, reflected his work in the period context. Through banal subjects of (not only) his pictures, where he was inspired by food, sci-fi and fantasy film characters or promotional leaflets, he explored, with inherent ironic or even sarcastic humour, deeper society-wide issues. His works contributed essentially to the discussion on painting as an obsolete medium while he defended painting.
